Self Citation in SPIE Proceedings
Self citation in SPIE conference proceedings
Connecting mind. Increasing citation.
SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics. SPIE hold conferences every year throughout USA. SPIE also published conference proceedings.
The paper in the proceedings does not have a strict limit on the number of references. And scientists like to play trick on that. Particularly the youngest professor Nelson Tansu have chance to gain many self citation.
Let’s look at this year’s Conference in January 2011 in San Francisco. I was there as well, not a brilliant weather at that time of the year.
Tansu Group presented 6 papers in different headings, and let’s look at the number of self citation:
- Novel approaches for high-efficiency InGaN quantum wells light-emitting diodes: Device physics and epitaxy engineering Tansu, N., Zhao, H., Zhang, J., Liu, G., Li, X.-H., Ee, Y.-K., Song, R., Huang, G.S. 2011 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering
7954, art. no. 795418
This paper has 40 self citation to Tansu
Wow.. can you belive that? 40 self citation in a paper. This must be a world record in self
citation. Tansu has reported the best self citation threshold in the record! - Zhang, J., Zhao, H., Tansu, N. 2011 Gain characteristics of deep UV AlGaN quantum wells
lasers
Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 7953, art. no. 79530H
This paper has 27 self citation to Tansu - Enhancement of light extraction efficiency of InGaN quantum wells light-emitting diodes using
TiO2 microsphere arrays Li, X.-H., Ee, Y.-K., Song, R., Tansu, N. 2011 Proceedings of
SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 7954, art. no. 79540U
This paper has 27 self citation to Tansu - Thermoelectric properties of MOCVD-grown AlInN alloys with various compositions Zhang, J.,
Tong, H., Liu, G., Herbsommer, J.A., Huang, G.S., Tansu, N. 2011 Proceedings of SPIE - The
International Society for Optical Engineering 7939, art. no. 79390O
This paper has 27 self citation to Tansu - Cathodoluminescence characteristics of linearly shaped staggered InGaN quantum wells lightemitting

2011 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 7939, art. no.
793905
This paper has 27 self citation to Tansu - Analysis of thermoelectric properties of AlInN semiconductor alloys Zhang, J., Tong, H.,
Herbsommer, J.A., Tansu, N. 2011 Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical
Engineering 7933, art. no. 79330X
This paper has 28 self references to Tansu
176 self citation from just 6 papers. This is how to get the most citation in as little time as possible. Tansu definitely gain a large self citation. This citation gain characteristic is so strong that Tansu has reported the best threshold in self citation, ever!
Let’s look at last year’s SPIE 2010 to see if there is a self consistent characteristic:
- Band structure calculation of dilute-As GaNAs by first principle Li, X.-H., Tong, H., Zhao, H., Tansu, N. 2010 Proceedings of SPIE -The International Society for Optical Engineering
